Visit to a Bronze Age standing stone circle on the Beara Peninsula.

It’s been a tough January with very poor weather but it was great to be able to get out and experience this fascinating ancient landscape.

I had hoped to do Hungry Hill today, but it was always going to be a long shot and as I was nearing the turn off to the Healy Pass it was obvious there would be no mountains today. I’d previously parked in the little woodland car park here, just on the road pretty much, and walked the Doorus loop, a nice walk but not much going on if I remember correctly.

Initially I walked up by the river, up to the last little waterfall for a look see, before then deciding I was going to spend some time here. Once that decision was made I said i’ve give a look at the Stone Circle I see sighposted, as I didn’t know anything about it. I have to say, i’m incredibly glad I did. It’s fascinating and the imagination runs wild when up there.

I have since go online and checked out a few very good links detailing the site.

I’ll have to head back there now I have more info on it. And the best thing for me going forward is, there are loads of these sites on the Beara Peninsula, I can’t wait to visit them during the coming year. They are also a great option to investigate when the cloud is down and the mountains are out of the question as was the case today.

As you can see in the video the weather wasn’t great but it only added to the place. It was hard to film in with the sheets of rain though.

On the way down, I spent some time messing around with photographing the two little waterfalls. It was quite enjoyable and relaxing, even with the noise of the water in an otherwise quiet environment.

Here are the pics from the video. It was quite a messy environment with lots of debris around the place but it’s always fun messing around with long exposure waterfall photography. I know some might saw about a shorted shutter speed to capture the movement of the water, I tried these and it just didn’t work, not this time at least. Also, while these shots scream out for a vignette, I didn’t bother, i’m growing weary of the over processed shots I see online and the formulas used. Now, don’t get me wrong, they are edited a good bit, just not to the over the top degree you’d often see. To be honest, it’s just just me being cranky. carry on……
