Loch a’Dúin

Watch on YouTube

A truly stunning hike in this ancient location leading to a beautiful waterfall, a lake and the remains of a fort on an island. You could not make it up if you tried.

The parking for here is just at the side of the road at Kilmore Cross as you turn off the Conor Pass road towards Cloghane and Brandon.

It’s a fairly straightforward walk up, with the first half being on a farm road, where after the bridge it becomes a lot more boggy. To be honest everywhere was drenched after the weather we’ve have for July, which has been atrocious. Once you get up to the lake there are rocks to be navigated. There’s nothing too awkward , just be careful especially when it’s wet.

As I mentioned in the video the history of this area is intriguing. These are the links to the local website I mentioned in the video. There is a link to two documents on the first website that make for really interesting reading before heading on this walk. I would recommend going thru at least some of it.

(the 2nd link here is from their new website, just in case the first one stops working in the future)

The flow from the river was pretty fast and not worth the risk trying to cross it. There’ll be other days.

Overall it’s a really nice, pleasant walk. It’s been a while since I was up there and I]m surprised I hadn’t gone back sooner. Definitely the waterfall was fantastic this time as on the previous visit the flow was no where near as impressive, so that is something to take into consideration. I suppose it the same with every waterfall when you think about it.

I cut it out of the video but I had initially intended on heading up to lake Lock Chom Callain , really poor attempt at the pronunciation in the video,, mortifying :D . The lake lies under Binn na Naomh / Slievenea Northeast and I still haven’t got up to it, maybe over the next few weeks. As the same plateau feeds this lake I wonder will the waterfall at the back be any bit similar, i’ll just have to find out.

Anyway, It was great to get out and it was a really enjoyable day. Definitely one of the easier ones and well worth the effort

Thanks again for reading
