Paternoster Lakes - Mount Brandon

Watch on YouTube

Fantastic hike up thru the Paternoster Lakes taking in Mount Brandon, Brandon Peak and Gearhane.

It’s a long hike with good elevation gain overall, it’s a tough one, for me, but incredibly enjoyable. Coming up thru the lakes is spectacular.

Just a note, I did get the navigation wrong coming off Gearhane. Please do not follow the route off Gearhane I took as the conditions were really awful in the bottom section, with heather, sheets of rock and very very uneven slippery ground. It took a while and a lot of concentration was needed. I will never again come down that bottom section and it should only be attempted by experienced hill walkers, definitely not a one for casual walkers.

I am going to return soon to see about that first ridge. On the East West Maps there’s a fence called Mary Annes Wire and I believe I should have come down that. I just have it in my head now, so I have to find out.

If at all unsure, when coming off Gearhane, just continue onto Mullach Bheal. I have this route down previously and it is fine.

I didn’t take many images this day, the cloud up top was a bit of a mess, and the light was harsh in the lower sections. I still like the ones I did come away with, a nice record of the day.
