The Great Blasket Island
Watch on YouTube
This was a special one
For once the weather forecast was right. It’s been long winter and spring of disappointing weather but we struck gold on this day.
Nothing I can say will do the day justice, so if you haven’t already, do head over to YouTube and watch the video.
It was just SPECTACULAR!!
Just for reference, I got the ferry from Dunquin with Blasket Island Ferry. I just had to go from Dunquin and not Dingle…. just because..
It was €40 return. I had booked it early in the week, but the night before, I saw on their instagram that spaces had opened up on an earlier crossing so I rang and got that. Getting the extra hour on the island really helped with the hike, otherwise it would have been a bit tighter time wise. If you’re just going to the village and hanging around the main area, then their default times are ok.
The crossing itself, and actually coming back also, was a bit bumpy in the middle section , when it's more exposed. I could feel my head going weird on the way over, even thinking about it as I write this I can feel it happening also. moving on…
I presume if you’re reading this you know about the boat crossing and the necessity to go onto the rubber dingy to get to the boat on both sides as they can’t dock with at Dunquin or on the island itself.
Once on the island itself then its plain sailing. the video says it all really.
The only point’d mention about the route was the final section before the village, coming down the north side of the slope along the long cut into the hillside, it was very wet and very slippery. I fell once and when I was giving out to myself I very nearly went down again. I got nicely wet on my front, but it was fine day, so no harm done. When coming down there, do concentrate.
I’ll definitely head over again and spend more time at the village and maybe get closer to the seals if they’re still there. First time ever seeing seals in the wild, so that was nice.
Finally, I came home with an unexpected guest, a tick on my leg somehow, even tho I was wearing long leggings, so keep that in mind.
Overall a fantastic day, loved every minute of it.
Hope you enjoyed the video and the images
Thanks
